Project Description

The Lord-Lieutenant of Greater London is Her Majesty’s representative in Greater London and is charged with upholding the dignity of the Crown. Across the 32-boroughs (but not in the City of London) he is responsible for the promotion of civic, commercial, voluntary and social activities and thus is part of the fabric of London in all its manifestations. The organisation providing administration and support to the Lord-Lieutenant is referred to as the Greater London Lieutenancy.

The size and complexity of Greater London has resulted in some specific arrangements for its Lieutenancy which have informed the development of the new website...

A Lord-Lieutenant’s responsibilities.

The post of Lord-Lieutenant of a county or major city is an honorary appointment, whose origin dates back to King Henry VIII.  A Lord-Lieutenant’s responsibilities are wide ranging, and to assist him in these he may appoint a Vice Lord-Lieutenant and Deputy Lieutenants.

From royal visits, presentations and awards, to establishing supportive links with local government, charities, the military and youth organisations, the Lord-Lieutenant and his team fulfil many roles.  A principle purpose of the Lieutenancy is to facilitate the myriad ways by which the monarch is kept aware of what is happening among her people.

Greater London Lieutenancy tender process.

We triumphed in the formal tender process and in doing so beat some stiff competition from London based agencies. The development of the new Greater London Lieutenancy website was conducted in our design studio in the heart of Cornwall.  We worked closely with GLL to produce a clean, modern design that does not detract from the content.  Not only does the website meet the original technical specification, but it also reflects the nature of the work undertaken by the Lieutenancy with a fresh, contemporary feel.

Greater London Lieutenancy website features.

As you would expect from Button Web Design the website is fully responsive i.e. it scales and reformats automatically to match the type of device viewing whether that be a PC, laptop or mobile device such as a tablet or smartphone. In addition, the website includes a number of special features:

  • Two separate secure areas for the Deputy Lieutenants and Clerk’s office.  The website is furnished with a 256-bit encrypted SSL certificate allowing designated users to access restricted areas of the website using a secure login
